The Other Royal Wedding
"A leader has the vision and conviction that a dream can be achieved. He inspires the power and energy to get it done."
Ralph Lauren
There is a joke I always make at shoots and on set when someone is dressing me and they notice how long my arms are. Now I know I'm not exactly small at 6ft 3, however I joke that I must have been an orangutan in a previous life, as off-the-peg suits, and especially shirts, are never long enough. Personal tailoring/bespoke suits (to my delight), are now not just the privilege of the wealthy Savile row gent. Thanks to Reiss, Massimo Dutti and Lawson & Walker, bespoke quality and service is now available on the high street very inexpensively. Shirts are a different matter though, and my solution has been to have to buy bigger shirts that have longer arms and then have them tailored - but no more! Thomas Pink, of wonderful historic Jermyn Street in London, has made me a couple of wonderful personal tailored shirts (called Personally Pink). Collar, cuff, length, colour and material all to my specification. The shirts even come with my initials, cufflinks and gold 'Pink" embossed collar bones - wonderful. Although, now I can't make my orangutan joke that always got a good laugh, but I think I can live with it. Have a look for yourself here: http://www.thomaspink.com/fcp/content/Personally/editorial
As Easter has only just passed, I would like to talk about the good book. However, the good book in my house is called Speed, Style and Beauty. This gorgeous book features 29 breathtaking cars from Ralph Lauren's immense collection of cars. Why am I suddenly bringing this book to your attention? Well, I am currently sat on the Eurostar back from Paris having attended the L'Art De L'Automobile. A selection of Ralph Lauren's most prestigious sports cars from the Thirties to the present day is on view for the first time in Europe at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
I can't explain how truly excited I was to receive this invitation. Not only did the anticipation of getting to see and touch a large number of my dream cars for the first time keep me awake most of Tuesday night, but the idea that I may get to meet arguably the foremost and influential designers in history meant that most of Tuesday afternoon was spent trying to choose the right suit/shirt/tie combination for the occasion. I can't underestimate the amount Ralph Lauren inspires and influences my style, not just in fashion, but also in terms of interior design, cars and just plain style.
The whole evening was a hugely special affair. The panache of every single small detail was astonishing. The location the Musée des Arts Décoratifs was special in itself. All the staff (including Ralph), were in single or double breasted immaculate black suits, with white shirt and pocket squares. And the cars - what can I say? Ralph Lauren describes them as moving art and although I agree with this, the most significant pull (apart from every one of them being toe curlingly beautiful), is the history and story behind their concept, design and reasons for manufacturer. From the story of the Bentley boys with the Bentley Blower, to the Jaguar XKSS which was derived from the successful racing XKD and then being driven around the Hollywood hills by Steve McQueen. So to say I was in my element is an understatement. This may be the last time I'm invited however, as they had to ask me repeatedly to stop looking at the cars and sit down for dinner. Oops.
The collection has made me even more tempted to add to my little collection (I hope my bank manager doesn't read this blog). The classic Merc 190sl is still being restored as we speak, but the car I'm looking at right now is the new Morgan 3 wheeler. I want, more like need, one so badly that I think maybe I should be kept under supervision for the next few months. But take a look at www.morgan3wheeler.co.uk. I know I will be on there constantly for about the next week.
You may have also heard that at VOGUE.COM there is huge excitement in the air for the biggest wedding of the year, if not the decade. No, no, no readers - not William and Kate. But Dolly Jones (editor of VOGUE.COM) is getting married this week. Even though the royal wedding may be stealing some of Dolly's thunder, one thing I know is that Dolly will look even more stunning than Miss Middleton and DEFINITELY be wearing better shoes! Congratulations to Dolly and her new husband.

Saturdays' Mollie King 'dating David Gandy'
The Saturdays star Mollie King has reportedly begun dating male model David Gandy.
The singer is said to have met Gandy - best known for appearing in a Dolce&Gabbana advert - at an event last month.
A source told The Sun: "It's early days but so far, so good. They're having a really good time together. David's a few years older than Mollie but you can't tell."
King, who split from boyfriend of two years Andy Brown in February, cheered Gandy on as he ran the London Marathon last weekend.

From Heaven To Hell In A Week
“The ultimate measure of a person is not where they stand in moments of comfort, but where they stand in times of challenge.”
Martin Luther King
This was kindly sent to me by a very close friend just before I started the Marathon on Sunday morning and on the 16th mile, it was this quote that spurred me on to push for a 8min 30sec mile between miles 16 and 17. So, as you may have guessed ladies and gentlemen, I definitely started the London Marathon (regular readers have endured me boring them to tears with my build up to the big day!). So what happened after mile 17? Well, I’ll tell you at the end of the blog. The clue may be in the title though.
The heaven part of this week began in Germany at the world famous and historic Nurburgring. Built in the Twenties, but modified many times, the “Nordschliefe” was nicknamed The Green Hell by Jackie Stewart and is widely considered the toughest, most dangerous, and most demanding purpose-built racing circuit in the world. And Jaguar were stupid, I’m sorry, I mean kind enough to let me lose on it for 10 glorious laps of the 22km course. It’s something every petrol head dreams of doing once in their life and, thanks to Jaguar I got to drive in each and every wonderful car in the range - with top drivers and experts instructing me from a car in front.
Wow, what a car company and brand Jaguar are becoming. I wrote an article 18 months ago on how I thought, without the restraints of Ford ownership, just what a sleeping giant it is - and they are proving me right (smug grin). Their cars pretty much top all the car categories they enter into. The engines, engineering expertise, chassis set up, use of lightweight aluminum and design, are as advanced and astounding as you will find in the industry. The history of the company is also virtually unrivalled. Hollywood stars such as Steve McQueen driving the XKSS, the Jaguar E type, Le Mans 1-2-3 wins - they have it all and it’s British (aren’t all the best things? Hmmmmm).
Back to the Marathon. My time for the 13th mile was 1h 50, which I was happy with and, although hard going (it was a very warm day), I had a good rhythm. My refueling was going well, the injured knees and calf muscles were holding up well and then - disaster. On the 17th mile, both my thighs cramped up - something I’ve never suffered from before or had thought about. I tried stretching, more hydration, even having a leg massage by the wonderful St Johns ambulance - but to no avail. All I could do was walk and run a little from then, but with running the cramping and pain got even worse. So I finished in 4hrs 34mins which was a little disappointing and you know what this means - I’m going to have to go through it all again and get a better time!
Thank you to all of you who have supported and sponsored the Oxglam group. The real inspiration on the day though are the amount of people who turn up to support and cheer and give the runners jelly babies (this was my favourite part). But also just the grit, determination and guile of fellow runners, from PC David Rathband who is blind and ran it, to a guy who ran the entire race backwards. Amazing. Also a quick mention to fellow VOGUE.COM blogger Henry Holland, who completed it in what I heard was 3hs 30m. Well done Sir!
Quick fashion/style reference. While watching a programme about Margaret Thatcher, what held my attention was the amazingly attired gentlemen in the background of all the TV clips. It turns out that his name is Gordon Reece and he was political strategist to ‘Maggie’ in 1979. Now that’s how an English gentlemen should dress, quite brilliant, men take note!
Now, leaving two hours earlier than I usually would, I’m off to the airport. My legs and muscles will only allow me to waddle at a very slow pace today.

Cool Runnings
Agyness Deyn and David Gandy at a London Marathon photocall today © Rex Features. |
FASHION'S finest are gearing up to take part in the London Marathon this Sunday, including VOGUE.COM bloggers David Gandy and Henry Holland, and models Tuuli Shipster and Agyness Deyn. The group, who have named themselves the Oxglam Squad, have committed to the 26-mile-long run to raise money for Oxfam.
"I'm so bored of being boring and not drinking or smoking so I'm super excited about the run now and getting it done!" Henry Holland tells us. "I've always wanted to do it, and then when Tuuli asked me to be part of a team for Oxfam I had to say yes."
The designer has been training with a trainer since October with, as he describes, "varying degrees of dedication". Does he have any tips for other London Marathon participants?
"I just listen to music and think about how happy I'm going to be when I finish," he says. It can get quite addictive too."
David Gandy, however, isn't feeling quite as prepared.
"I just haven't really had too much time to train properly," he tells us. "I've been on and off planes all year and when I did get a chance to train hard, with long runs and inteval training, my knees have not taken the strain well and I've been in a lot of pain so I'm nowhere near as prepared as I should be, but we'll see how my body is on the day. A huge skiing crash didn't really help either! Now is that enough excuses for when I finish in over six hours?!"
The model decided to complete the marathon through a mix of "stupidity" and a desire to help raise money for Oxfam - his "motivational force". Is he feeling nervous in the final build-up?
"I'm pretty apprehensive if I'm to be honest," he admits. "I'm built more for, and have always been, a sprinter - long distance is very difficult for me being 15 stone. But, it's a great cause and so many people have told me what an amazing day it is - so I'm very much looking forward to experiencing everything the day will bring, be it smiles or tears."

Something tells us we'll be watching the London Marathon in FULL this weekend...
Above: David Gandy is running the London Marathon - which basically means we'll watch it until we see him. |
ABOVE: David Gandy was posing with Agyness Deyn at the photocall for celeb London Marathon runners. |
IF there was ever a reason to watch the London Marathon in FULL this weekend, then David Gandy getting sweaty would be it.A host of celebrities running in this year's London Marathon got together in London for a photocall today and we emitted a high-pitched scream when we saw D&G model David Gandy among them.
The seriously-sexy man-hunk, who gives us a bad case of dry mouth whenever that ad of him writhing around in a boat comes on, was posing in his full loveliness with fellow catwalker Agyness Deyn.
Even in a fluorescent-green running bib, the perfectly-chiselled heartthrob looks a-maaaazing, pulling a relaxed pose for the cameras as he stood next to Agy.
Judging by her VERY smiley face, she was the gibbering wreck we would have been if he was stood next to us - although we'd have played it a BIT cooler (we're just being mean 'cos we're well jel he had his arm round her).
Anyway, Dave and his rippling muscles and tight bottom will be joining the celeb athletes on Saturday - which also include Elen Rivas, Joe Pasquale, Dwight Yorke, Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell.
We'll be sure to keep our eye out for him and then continually rewind and replay the moment we catch him for the rest of Saturday afternoon...

Oxglam Squad's fundraising page
Hello!
We're the Oxglam Squad and consist of Tuuli Shipster, Agyness Deyn, David Gandy, Henry Holland, Greg Hollins, Emma Pierson, Sara Pierson, Carly Roberts, Chantal Brown and Amiee Robinson. We're very scared but very excited to be running this year's Virgin London Marathon...and especially for Oxfam! 26 miles is pretty long way, but it's for a very good cause!
We're hoping to raise as much money as possible for Oxfam's programmes in Honduras, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Sri Lanka. These projects will support people who are trying to work their way out of grinding poverty, through farming or running small businesses. In fact, we even plan to travel to Tanzania in the coming weeks to make a little film to show you where your money will be going, so watch this space!
We'll be adding more content over the coming weeks, to keep you guys updated on our efforts. You can find out more about the projects at:
www.oxfam.org.uk/running
In the meantime, please donate generously!
The Oxglam Team x
PS: And if anything goes wrong or we injure ourselves, we're blaming our friend and photographer Rankin, who cajoled us into running and isn't even doing it himself!
